I don’t usually go for gimmicky wines with cutesy labels, but The Pinot Project pleasantly surprised me. (Actual label language: “This label will self-destruct in 5 seconds.” Eyeroll.) It’s lightweight and delicate enough to qualify as a true Pinot, making this a great summer red. The slight hint of spice goes well with grilled meats, even steaks. But unlike more expensive French Pinot Noirs, this one isn’t so lightweight and fragile that you’re afraid you’ll break it by pouring it into your glass. This is definitely a Pinot Noir, but make no mistake: this is a California red, which means earthiness and a bold, lingering finish. Imagine if “Amelie” had been directed by Michael Bay. That’s The Pinot Project.
